内蒙古自治区斑啄木鸟的一新亚种——乌拉山亚种
A NEW SUBSPECIES OF DENDROCOPOS MAJOR FROM THE INNER MONGOLIAN AUTONOMOUS REGION-D. M. WULASHAMCUS
【Abstract】 In our avifaunal studies of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Kegion, we have discovered a new subspecies of the great spotted woodpecker, which we propose to-name as:Dendrocopos major wulashanicus subsp. nov.Holotype: Adult male (Field number 108; Museum number 54627) collected from. Wu-la Shan on Sept. 22, 1971.Allotype: Adult female (Field number 85; Museum number 54626) collected from Wu-la Shan on Sept. 16, 1971.Both holotype and allotype are deposited in the Peking Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica, Peking.Diagnosis Comparison of the distinctive characteristics of the new subspecies with those of allied forms is given in Table 1 in the Chinese text. With respect to the length of the culmen, there are no appreciable differences between the different subspecies listed, only D.m. cabanisi having slightly longer bills. With respect to the length of wings, D.m. beicki ranks first, and D.m. hainanus last, with the other subspecies in between, indicating that teicki is the largest in body size whereas hainmus the smallest. The fact that hainanus has the shortest wings is in accord with our contention that island subspecies show a distinct shortage of wings (Cheng et Tang, 1973).With respect to the size of the white spots on the innermost longer secondaries, D.m. cabanisi ranks first, while D.m. stresemanni last, with the other subspecies in between. With respect to the width of the black bars on the outermost rectrices, D.m. beicki ranks first, cabanisi last, with the others in between. With respect to the coloration of the underpaits, D.m. hainanus is rufous-white, mandarinus and cabanisi more or less rufous, beicki rufous-brown, stresemanni dark rufous brown, while wulashanicus is distinctly-brown. Greyish but with. The new subspecies resembles D.m. beicki most closely but is smaller in body size (based on wing length) and has narrower bkck bars on the tail, The most distinctive difference, however, lies in the coloration of the underparts. In ease of beicki, the underparts are brown tinged with rufous-yellow, while in case of wulashanicus, they are brown, tinged with greyish, hence darker. The new subspecies is also similar to stresemanni, but differs from the latter in having slightly larger white spots on. the wings, as in cabanisi, and in having the underparts much darker in color.Distribution Confined to the Yin-Shan Ranges of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Eegion.Specimens examined:D.m. cabanisi 10 10 collected from Hobei, Honan, Shanxi, Shandong.Dm. mandarinus 10 7 collected from Guandong, Guangri, Giangxi, Pujian, Zhejiang, and S. Jiangsu.D.m. beicki 7 8 collected from Qinghai and Gansu.D.m. stresemanni 8 6 collected from Sichuan and Yunnan.D.m. wulashaninus 2 1 collected from the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Eegion.D.m. hainanus 10 7 collected from Hainan Is.
