【Abstract】 This work was carried out during March to September, 1960, at Taohualing, Ichang, Hupei Province. The group of herons, about 150 pairs in number, was composed of three species, namely, Pond Heron (Ardeola bacchus), Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax nycticorax} and Little Egret (Egretta garzetta garytta), of which the first dominated.In Ichang the Pond Hcros arrived at the end of March, and remained until the end of October. They began to build their nests in the beginning of May. The position of the nests was quite near the top of the trees, generally 17 meters above the ground. The clutch consisted of 3-5, generally 4 eggs, which measured 39.5×30.7 mm in size, and averaged 13.4 gms in weight. The nestlings hatched in the beginning of June, weighing 13.5 gms as an average. Theit body weight increased 9.8-11.35 gms each day before attaining an age of 10-12 days. They left the nests when they were 33-36 days old. Both parents took part in incubation and the feeding of the young.更多还原
